Florida Winter HVAC Prep: Don't Skip These Steps

By A Cool Breeze of Central Florida

Most Florida homeowners don't think twice about their HVAC system when the calendar flips to October. After all, it's still warm outside, right? But here's the thing — those few weeks of cooler weather we get in Central Florida can expose problems in your system that have been quietly building all summer long.

If your heat hasn't kicked on since last February, now is exactly the right time to make sure it's ready. And your ductwork? That's the part most people forget entirely — until they're uncomfortable and paying for it.

Here's what you need to check before Florida's version of winter arrives.

Don't Assume Your Heat Works Just Because It Did Last Year

Your heating system sits dormant for eight or nine months out of the year in Central Florida. That's a long time. Dust accumulates on heat strips and burners, capacitors age, and electrical connections can loosen over time — all without any visible warning signs.

The first cold snap of the season is the worst time to find out your heat isn't working. Technicians get slammed with calls the moment temperatures drop, and you could be waiting days for service.

What to do: Turn your thermostat to heat mode and set it a few degrees above the current room temperature. Let it run for 10–15 minutes. Listen for unusual sounds, check that warm air is actually coming out of your vents, and make sure the system shuts off when it reaches the set temperature. If anything seems off — or if you smell a burning odor when it first kicks on (beyond the normal brief dust smell) — call a technician before you need it urgently.

Your Ductwork Is the Hidden Problem

This is the one most homeowners overlook, and it's often the most impactful.

Over the summer, your ducts have been running hard — pushing cold air through every room in your home. That constant use, combined with Florida's humidity, creates the perfect conditions for:

  • Leaks and gaps at duct joints and connections
  • Mold and mildew growth inside ducts, especially in humid attic spaces
  • Pest intrusion — rodents and insects love to nest in ductwork during cooler months
  • Insulation breakdown on older flex duct systems
When your heat turns on for the first time, it pushes air through all of those same ducts. If there are leaks, you're heating your attic instead of your living room. If there's mold, you're circulating it through your home. Neither is acceptable.

What to do: Have your ductwork inspected before the season changes. A professional can check for leaks, test airflow balance across rooms, and look for signs of moisture or pest damage. Sealing leaky ducts alone can reduce your energy bills by 20–30% — and that applies to your cooling costs next summer too.

Change Your Air Filter — Seriously

It sounds basic, but a clogged air filter is one of the most common causes of HVAC problems we see all year. A dirty filter restricts airflow, makes your system work harder, and can cause your heat strips to overheat and trip the safety shutoff.

In Florida, filters tend to get dirty faster than in drier climates because of the humidity and the amount of time your system runs. If you haven't changed yours in the last 60–90 days, do it now before you switch over to heating mode.

What to use: A MERV 8 or MERV 11 filter is the sweet spot for most Central Florida homes — good filtration without over-restricting airflow. Avoid the ultra-thick MERV 13+ filters unless your system was specifically designed for them.

Check Your Thermostat and Sensors

Your thermostat is the brain of your HVAC system. If it's reading the temperature inaccurately, your system will short-cycle, run too long, or fail to reach your set temperature — all of which waste energy and wear out components faster.

If you're still running an older manual or basic programmable thermostat, this is a great time to upgrade to a smart thermostat. Modern smart thermostats learn your schedule, adjust automatically, and give you remote control from your phone — which is especially useful during Florida's unpredictable cold snaps.

Also check: The batteries in your thermostat if it uses them. A low battery is a surprisingly common cause of heating calls in the fall.

Clear the Area Around Your Outdoor Unit

Your outdoor condenser unit has been working hard all summer. Before cooler weather sets in, take a few minutes to:

  • Remove any leaves, grass clippings, or debris that have collected around the unit
  • Trim back any shrubs or plants that have grown within two feet of the unit
  • Check that the unit is still level on its pad (Florida soil can shift)
  • Rinse the fins gently with a garden hose if they look dirty
One thing NOT to do: Don't cover your outdoor unit for the winter. Unlike northern climates, Florida's winters are short and mild, and covering the unit traps moisture and creates a perfect home for pests. Your unit is designed to be outside year-round.

Schedule a Professional Tune-Up Before the Rush

The best time to get your system serviced is before you need it. A professional HVAC tune-up in October or early November means:

  • Your technician has time to order any parts that might be needed
  • You're not competing with every other homeowner who waited until the first cold night
  • Any issues found can be addressed on your schedule, not in an emergency
A full tune-up covers your heating components, electrical connections, refrigerant levels, ductwork inspection, filter check, thermostat calibration, and a full system test — everything you need to go into winter with confidence.

The Bottom Line for Central Florida Homeowners

Florida winters may be short, but they're real — and your HVAC system deserves the same attention here as it would anywhere else. The difference is that in Florida, your system also has to be ready to flip back to cooling mode in a matter of days when temperatures bounce back up.

A well-maintained system handles those swings efficiently. A neglected one struggles, runs up your energy bill, and eventually breaks down at the worst possible time.

Don't wait for the first cold night to find out where you stand. A little preparation now goes a long way toward keeping your home comfortable all season long — and protecting the investment you've made in your HVAC equipment.
